Channel letters, LED or neon? Choosing a sign that works
The facade, the light around it and the reading distance decide the type of sign. Here is where channel letters, LED, neon and pylon signs work best.
Choosing a sign is a question about the facade before it is a question about taste. The surface it mounts to, the light around it and the distance it has to be read from largely settle which type is right. This guide covers where the most common types work well. The decision becomes concrete during the site survey.
Who are channel letters right for?
They are the first candidate for a business that wants to look established and has a facade that allows it. Read by their depth during the day and by internal lighting at night, they are the standard for banks and branded retail for good reason. Because each letter is produced individually, the cost rises with the length of the wording.
Where do LED signs come into their own?
For messages that change, an LED display is the only real answer. Campaigns, prices and notices update remotely. In fixed illuminated boxes, LED has replaced older fluorescent systems on consumption alone. On roadsides and on facades facing evening traffic, brightness is what puts it ahead.
Does the neon look still make sense?
The look of glass neon today comes from flexible LED neon. It does not shatter, it draws far less power and it carries the same warm line of light. In cafes, restaurants and boutique spaces it is one of the most effective ways to set an atmosphere. It suits places that want character more than an office facade that wants gravity.
What to settle before deciding
Three things. The distance the sign has to be read from, the electrical and mounting conditions of the facade, and local obligations such as advertising notifications. Measuring on site is not negotiable. A sign produced from measurements given over the phone produces surprises on installation day. That is why the survey is free and comes first.
What changes the price of a sign?
The type (channel letters, LED, neon, pylon), the size, the material and the mounting conditions. Any figure quoted without seeing the facade is misleading. A firm quote follows the measurements taken during the free survey.
Can my old sign be converted to LED?
In most cases yes. Converting old fluorescent boxes to LED is among the jobs we do most often. If the existing housing is sound it is kept and the cost drops noticeably. The state of the housing becomes clear during the survey.
